After celebrating its fourth anniversary, CASA SEAT is inaugurating its summer programme with a new exhibition on sustainable art and a cycle of film screenings in the space’s auditorium.

On 10 July, CASA SEAT is presenting a new exhibition on the evolution of sustainable art, which seeks to create works using all kinds of waste material that is reusable or recyclable, thus helping to preserve the environment.

The exhibition traces the evolution of sustainable art from its beginnings to the present day through two pioneers in this field, Modest Cuixart and HA Schult, with a selection of works by contemporary artists such as Luis Cebaqueva, Ocean Sole, Lisa Rubin, Nourathar, Indira Urrutia and 3-DKE, among others.

Modest Cuixart, who was a self-taught Catalan painter, was known for his experimentation with abstract art, and as early as the 1960s began working with discarded materials or objets trouvés. His work has been exhibited in venues such as the Cercle des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the National Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, the Tate Gallery in London and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Some of his work is currently on display at the MoMA in New York, the Queen Sofia Museum in Madrid and the MACBA in Barcelona, among other collections.

Meanwhile, HA Schult is a German artist known for object and performance art and sustainable art and is considered a pioneer in addressing ecological concerns through art. In 1969, Schult attracted worldwide attention with his happening dubbed Situation Schackstrasse, which consisted of covering an entire street in Munich with rubbish and paper. His works, including Flügelauto, Trash People, Hotel Europa, Trees for Peace and Love Letters, are exhibited all over the world.

In addition to the works of the pioneers Cuixart and Schult, the exhibition will also include a series of works by current artists linked to sustainable art and that have contributed to raising awareness about environmental care. Coming from Europe, America and Africa and shaped by different artistic traditions, these contemporary artists have delved into the creative potential of waste materials using a variety of techniques and forms of expression. The pieces in the exhibition, which will be open to the public from 10 July to 7 September, range from painting, design, illustration, assemblage, and collage.

A summer of cinema

For the second year running, CASA SEAT will be showing films in its auditorium on Fridays and Saturdays in July and August. This year, from 13 July until 31 August, films will be programmed in three categories: “Debut Films”; a selection of works by CUPRA global ambassador director and producer J.A. Bayona; and “KIDS”, with family films. In addition, there will be screenings of the film Stonewall as a preview to Pride Barcelona 2024.

In the “Debut Films” category, audiences will be able to enjoy feature films such as the Spanish comedy-drama Crossing the Border, directed by and starring Carlos Iglesias; Solas, winner of five Goya awards, including Best New Director and Original Screenplay; Hola, ¿estás sola?, the directorial debut of actress Icíar Bollaín; and Suro, winner of three Gaudí Awards.

The selection of works by J.A. Bayona includes proposals such as The Orphanage, winner of seven Goya Awards; The Impossible, winner of five Goya Awards and with record box office ticket sales; A Monster Calls, winner of nine Goya Awards; and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which was the third highest-grossing film of 2018 and peaked as the twelfth highest-grossing film of all time.

Finally, the line-up of children’s films at CASA SEAT on Saturday mornings includes the French film Mia and the White Lion, by the producer of The Chorus; Ernest and Celestine: A Trip to Gibberitia, winner of the César Award for Best Animated Film; Oink, the Opening Film of the Generation K+ section at the Berlinale 2022; Una aventura gigante, directed by Latin American animation pioneer Eduardo Schuldt; and The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales, winner of the César Award for Best Animated Film in 2018.

Two concerts in this summer’s musical agenda

A week before the film programme begins, the July agenda will kick off with two musical sessions on the 6th in the auditorium. In the morning, Argentinian pianist Andrés Beeuwsaert is giving a recital in which he’ll invite the audience to take a sound journey between Latin America and Portugal. Beeuwsaert’s visit to the CASA SEAT auditorium is a stop in his European tour to perform a repertoire that includes some of his own creations as well as some by the most outstanding contemporary Ibero-American composers such as Carlos Aguirre, Egberto Gismonti, Hugo Fattoruso and Mário Laginha.

In the evening, the auditorium is hosting Raquel Lúa, whose concert will include songs from her second album, Piel as well as a preview of her upcoming album, which will be released later this year. With a voice reminiscent of great Spanish copla and Portuguese fado singers, Raquel moves between folk, lyrical and electronic music with a repertoire that explores the different stages of her life.
